Environment Focus

We believe in creating a safe healthy space for children. We all know that good indoor air quality can reduce or prevent asthma attacks; organic, additive-free, healthy foods can enhance immunity and prevent some behavior issues; and that chemicals such as BPA, BPS, phthalates, and Triclosan (found in children’s products from toys to hand soaps) can affect the developing hormone systems.

At Smarties we use only all-natural and non-toxic diapers, lotions, soaps, and cleaning supplies. We use organic mineral sunscreen made with non-nano zinc oxide (which means that it is NOT absorbed into the skin) to keep your little ones protected from both the sun and harmful chemicals.

Smarties Academy is committed to:

  • Using only chlorine-free diapers, wipes, and all-natural diaper creams
  • Supporting the use of cloth diapers
  • Never using chemical-based cleansers and only using all-natural air fresheners
  • Using only low or non VOC (volatile organic compound) paints
  • Teaching the importance of recycling and composting
  • Passing our compost onto local farms
  • Using high quality toys made of wood or recyclable plastic
  • Providing only natural foods, locally sourced where possible and often organic and/or seasonal
  • Preparing nutritious, balanced meals to enhance children’s immunity

Nutrition Focus

Children 12 months and older are served breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack. Infants 6 to 12 months follow a food introduction plan which teachers and parents coordinate on when the family is ready to introduce solid foods.

Smarties Academy recognizes the strong link between healthy, active bodies and minds. We take great care in our menu planning purchasing only natural, organic foods and focusing on seasonal selections from local sources whenever possible.

We also follow principles for feeding for immunity. Each day’s menu provides nutrients that help boost the children’s immune systems and promote health and wellness.

We purchase food from local farmers that deliver seasonal fruits, vegetables, and foods directly to Smarties Academy. We also shop at healthier grocers such as the DeKalb Farmers Market and Whole Foods for a variety of organic products including dairy, cheese, pasta, and produce for our meals.

We buy grains such as whole wheat, barley, oats, amaranth, and rye from a farm in Kennesaw Georgia, and mill our grains in-house each day to make pancakes, waffles, breads, muffins, granola, and breakfast cereals.

Smarties use healthy sweeteners such as honey sourced from a local beekeeper, Suconut, maple syrup, and use absolutely nothing artificial – no products with High Fructose Corn Syrup, no colors or dyes, no artificial or natural flavors of any kind. Only approved snacks and treats can be brought in by parents for birthday treats.

All meals are made fresh in-house, daily, by a trained chef, and delivered hot to each classroom. We constantly search out and modify recipes that call for only the freshest ingredients, healthy whole grains, and update the menu monthly.

Registered Dietician Testimonial

As a registered dietitian nutritionist, I focus a great deal on healthy eating and helping clients reach their health potential through food, and food that comes from local, sustainable, and quality farms, manufacturers, and grocers. The quality of the food at Smarties Academy goes beyond organic and local farm-to-fork, they make all their meals fresh daily and provide some of healthiest and yummiest food for my daughter.

The menu at Smarties is SMART! They are constantly looking for new recipes and enhancing their menu to meet the dietary guidelines for all the children for each age group as well. They consulted with me to help meet dietary guidelines and standards, and to analyze and provide nutrient information for their meals. They are careful and attentive to children’s dietary restrictions and maintain high food safety standards to avoid food contamination and food safety issues. They cater to children with all types of food allergies and provide meals prepared for those children’s dietary needs. Even the water they provide the kids is ultra-filtered from and special filtration machine purchased just for their kids.

Smarties Academy acts as a model of what serving food for developing little minds should be. The food standard is as high, if not higher, than all the standards Smarties Academy delivers! The only downside is that my daughter sometimes eats healthier than we do at home, and that’s coming from a registered dietitian nutritionist.
